Of what value did you give it to?
I am sure most of you would experience something like, in the middle of the day, something happened and you will be sad or happy for the rest of the day, depending on what happen or is it? :D
Now how do we determine whether something that happened is good or bad? By the emotions we attached to it? For example, you are given a raise by your boss, you attach the emotion of happiness to it. If you are retrenched, you attached the emotion of depress and/or anger to it. If that is the case how does one happy incident defer to another if emotions is the only thing that we attached to these happening? Think about it. If happy is just happy, there would not be words like "elated", "overjoy" and many other english words that describe happy which you will only see it in your GRE or SAT test. :P
Look deeper into it, it is actually the value that you attach to the happenings! If something that you give a high positive value, you will feel elated if it happens. If it is something that you give a small positive value, you will feel, well, just happy . If something bad happened, then you would give it a negative value and the intensity of the negative emotions would depend on the level of the value. This may explain two facts. One is similar happenings can have different meaning to different people. Secondly, if something good and bad happen at the same time, some people can be happy about it while others can be sad about it for example, your boss give you a raise and increase your job responsibility.
Now comes the best part. Since this value is given by you, that means you CAN control the intensity of your emotions. You can switch off the negative emotions by giving a 'zero' value to the happening, being indifferent. You can increase the intensity of positive emotions by attaching a higher value to it. How can you control the value you attached? Well, by looking at each happening from different angle might help.
Attaching to many negative value to too many happenings will not add too much or even destroy value to your life, and realising that you can control the value of each happening, why do yourself a disfavour of destroying value in your life? Add more value to your life by either accruing zero value to negative happenings and increase value APPROPRIATELY to positive happenings. Like that life will get better to some extent. Think about it.
Cheers!

I guess you are right in some sense but then there is always limitations to the variation a person is willing to adapt. This can depend on a person character, occupation and his way of life.
For instances, Mathematician can spend years to work on a problem (which mostly has no practical usage) and will only savour a few second of elation when he/she can solve it. However an economist will have no qealm for something like this. He/she will be looking for quick gain and quick returns with minimal effort and time.
